Legacy 1
Kevin challenged us on Sunday to leave a legacy.
If we are going to leave a legacy of faith, we need to make at least three resolutions.
1. Pray for your children and grandchildren daily.
2. Set a spiritual example in your home.
3. Open God’s word together.
Last fall Don Green preached from Jude and encouraged us to leave a legacy. Don gave us a six-word sermon that will take the rest of our lives to fulfill. Stay Focused, Stand Firm, and Finish Strong.
Legacy is vital for Christians. No matter how we live, we are leaving a legacy. As Christians who love Jesus, we want to leave a legacy of faith.
Psalm 20:7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
Do you trust in God, or do you trust in your cash flow?
What are you pursuing?
What you pursue is what your legacy will be.
What kind of legacy do you want to leave?
Don’t leave a legacy of loving stuff?
Instead, leave a legacy of loving Jesus.
Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
Begin today by loving Jesus more than stuff.
Serve Jesus, not what you can gain.
Ask God to convict your heart and show you where you need to repent.
God can be trusted.
Matthew 6:19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
In the New Testament, we don’t have examples of fathers and children, and in the Old Testament, we mainly have bad examples of fathers and children.
I am not the father I should be; maybe you struggle with the same thought. As long as we learn from our mistakes and strive to improve, we are headed in the right direction.
Compared to some of the godly men of the Bible we are doing pretty well.
Adam’s son killed his other son.
Abraham sent one son away from him.
Isaac played favorites with his sons, and so did Jacob.
Many of David’s sons were rebellious.
It was Eli and Samuel who always gave me pause. Eli and Samuel were great men of God, faithful in their duties before Almighty God, but they raised evil sons.
You can be godly and teach your kids to be godly, and they still choose to rebel against God.
But as fathers, we must ensure we are actively involved in their teaching and discipline.
Samuel tells us Eli’s failure as a dad.
1 Samuel 3:13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them. 14 Therefore, I swore to the house of Eli, 'The guilt of Eli's house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.'"
Samuel saw this firsthand and yet his sons turned out evil also.
Parents, if you know your kids are sinning and you do not restrain them, you are not leaving them a godly legacy. As God held Eli accountable, we will have to answer for our unwillingness to restrain our kids.
It is a sobering responsibility to raise our kids in the Lord. Let’s make every moment count so we can leave them a godly legacy. I believe we, as grandparents, have a responsibility to set a godly example.
We must make sure we are growing in Jesus to leave our kids a godly legacy.
Colossians 1:10 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way:
Take time right now to pray for your kids and grandkids.
Make a plan to spend time encouraging them and reading God’s word together.
Our Serve Love20, June 1 to June 9, would be a perfect time to begin creating a godly legacy of service.
