Theology Thursday: 5 Questions

Welcome to Theology Thursday! Theology is the study of God, his relation to the world, and our relation to him. I hope these newsletters help enhance your faith and deepen your love for God and his people, the church.

Today's Theology Thursday is different.

When I was a student at Lincoln Christian University, one of the required classes for all freshmen was a course called Purpose of the Church. At the very beginning of the very first class session of the semester, the professor didn’t lecture or facilitate discussion or anything, he just passed out papers with five questions printed on them, and asked each of us to go and spend the next hour of what would have been the class time (plus however much longer we wanted to spend on it until the next meeting) coming up with our answers and writing them down.

He didn’t want our immediate opinions, he wanted us to go looking for some insight to help formulate our thoughts, and to begin forming a Christian worldview about the church. This was a very valuable exercise for me, and I think it can be for y’all as well.

So, you have homework: think through each of these five questions, seek out information from whatever sources you’d like, and write down your responses. You don’t have to send them to me or anything (but you can if you want!); I just want you to write them down for your own spiritual development.

Have a great holiday weekend - happy Independence Day!

Here are the five questions:

1. What is the purpose of the local church? What’s it for?

2. Who belongs to the church? Who doesn’t?

3. Who leads the church? What is their commission and what are their responsibilities/obligations?

4. What does faithful church leadership look like? What does faithful church followership look like?

5. When you look at the examples of early church groups in the New Testament, how are they similar to the American church/Minier Christian church today? How are they different from MCC/much of your church experience?

TO KNOW GOD AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN!
