The book of Proverbs speaks often about the power of our words. Over and over, it reminds us that what comes out of our mouths can either build up or tear down, bless or curse, heal or harm. “Reckless words pierce like a sword,” Proverbs 12:18 warns, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

Every day, we wield this power. With a few words, we can lift a discouraged friend, encourage a weary soul, or speak truth that leads someone closer to Christ. But with those same lips, we can also gossip, criticize, or wound. Words once spoken cannot be taken back—they echo in the heart long after the conversation ends.

That’s why walking the way of wisdom includes not just what we know, but what we say. Proverbs 17:27 says, “The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint.” Wise people think before they speak; foolish people speak before they think. Jesus echoed this truth when he said that our words flow out of what fills our hearts (Matthew 12:34). If our hearts are filled with grace, our words will reflect that grace.

So today, pause before you speak. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your tongue—to make your words instruments of peace, truth, and encouragement. Let your speech be rooted in love for God and neighbor.

Your words matter. They have power. Use them to point others toward the healing hope of Christ.

Pray:
Lord, help me to be slow to speak and quick to listen. Fill my heart with your wisdom and love so that my words bring healing, not harm. Use my tongue to speak life today. Amen.

TO KNOW GOD AND TO MAKE HIM KNOWN!
