Series: Walking in Wisdom
Sermon: Wisdom for Dads - Proverbs 20:6-7, 23:24, 3:11-12 (9.28.25)
Watch the messages HERE.
“Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.” — Proverbs 20:6–7
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” — Proverbs 3:11–12
“The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.” — Proverbs 23:24
Being a dad is one of the greatest privileges God entrusts to a man. It is also one of the weightiest callings. The book of Proverbs reminds us that fatherhood is less about perfection and more about faithfully walking in God’s wisdom.
Proverbs 20:6–7 draws a sharp distinction between good intentions and consistent faithfulness. Many men may claim to love, but God highlights the rare gift of a father who lives with integrity. A dad’s quiet, daily faithfulness—praying for his children, working honestly, keeping his word, and modeling Christlike love—leaves a legacy far greater than wealth or success. A faithful life becomes a blessing that overflows into the lives of his children.
Proverbs 3:11–12 reminds fathers that discipline is not rejection, but love. Just as the Lord corrects his children to steer them toward life, dads are called to guide their children with both tenderness and firmness. Discipline is not about venting frustration, but about shaping character. When a father corrects with love, he mirrors God’s own heart—firm, yet deeply affectionate.
Finally, Proverbs 23:24 paints a beautiful picture of the outcome: joy. There is no greater delight for a father than to see his children walking in wisdom and righteousness. This joy is not instant—it is the fruit of years of prayer, guidance, patience, participation in the church, and trust in God’s work.
Dads, the call is clear: live faithfully before God, discipline with love, and trust him with your children’s growth. You are not asked to be flawless but to be steadfast in seeking wisdom from the Lord. As you walk with him, your children are watching—and one day, by God’s grace, they too will bring you joy as they walk the straight path he has set out for them.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for the gift of fatherhood. Help me walk faithfully before you, to love my children as you love me, and to guide them with wisdom. May my life reflect Christ, so that my children may be blessed and find joy in following you. Amen.
