Series: Bible Stories
Sermon: David and Goliath (8.3.25)
Watch the messages HERE

The battle belongs to the Lord. Your battles belong to the Lord. Trust God like David and you can live in confidence no matter what battle you face.

Believe and say what David said as he faced Goliath:

All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands
(1st Samuel 17:47).

That God will fight our battles means we do not have to anguish, be anxious, or be discouraged when bad things happen in our lives. When it seems a situation is hopeless or the matter at hand is too overwhelming, we may be tempted to doubt God. But Christians must remember that no problem is beyond the scope of God’s sovereign care for His children. He has promised to take care of us.

In Exodus 14:14 Moses tells the children of Israel, “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” S. Michael Houdmann says, “At that moment, they were standing at the edge of the Red Sea, hemmed in by the sea before them and the Egyptian army behind. The Israelites are in a seemingly impossible situation, but it was a situation brought on by the Lord Himself.”

Trust your health battles to the Lord.

Trust your relationship battles to the Lord.

Trust your day-to-day situations to the Lord.

Your battles seem impossible, but nothing is impossible for God (Luke 1:37).

Your battles are not against flesh and blood; every battle is spiritual.

Ephesians 6:10: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

God gives us the tools to fight. God doesn’t need a giant to win the battles. God needs a faithful servant who is a person after his own heart. Be faithful and let God win the battle.

To be faithful we need to put on spiritual armor.

Ephesians 6:14: “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

The best way to put on your armor is to be surrounded by other faithful children of God. Be at worship every Lord’s Day, join a life group, serve with others in ministry. Then you will be encircled by others to help you keep your eyes focused on Jesus (Hebrew 12:2).

Remember when Elisha’s servant was afraid because of a battle that was coming?  Elisha was being pursued but he had no fear because God was on his side.

2 Kings 6:15: “When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” the servant asked. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

Our battles - like Elisha’s battles - are the Lords. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Praise God!

Put your faith and confidence in Almighty God and no matter what battle you face you can rest in His peace.

Blessings,

Jim

PS. I have enjoyed the House of David on Prime TV, watch the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuECbZS6sis. As with any drama of the Bible there are details that are not accurate, producers take liberties to make it more exciting. Also, here's a modern sling-shotter showing how impressive a weapon that could be: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/oN6HSHTfkXE.
